  • Over 30,000 fans made the pilgrimage to the ski races on the Lauberhorn.

  • Apparently very few people were worried about the current corona situation.

  • As in Adelboden, there was no mask requirement in Wengen.

More than 43,000 ski fans followed the Lauberhorn races in Wengen over three days – no spectators were allowed on Thursday – live on site. The supporters of Feuz, Odermatt and Co. gathered on the Wengernalp in particular. No wonder: the organizers did not do without a finish grandstand like in Adelboden due to the corona pandemic. As in Adelboden, there was no mask requirement. As OC President Urs Näpflin told 20 Minuten before the competitions, the focus was on personal initiative. As some pictures showed, this probably did not work as desired everywhere.

Photos from Wengen were shared diligently on Twitter. A user wrote: “What’s going on in Wengen? Did the virus leave this spot in Switzerland?” It also says: “There will probably be many Omicron trophies awarded.” At least: In the mountains, the visitors were still able to spread out to some extent.

Worn a mask as a role model

In the evenings, however, there was a crowd on the village square at the award ceremonies. The 3G rule was mandatory, but the fans were crowded in front of the stage. On Saturday, access even had to be blocked due to the large number of interested visitors. There were hardly any masks to be seen. Most of the spectators celebrated without thinking about Omikron.

The fans flocked to the victory celebrations on Friday and especially on Saturday.

The fans on site as well as the volunteer employees were not worried about Corona. Two young women said in an interview with 20 minutes that they always wore a mask in the crowd and were able to concentrate on the sport, Omikron was not an issue there. However, the two women were more of an exception, as 20 minutes noted on site. Masks were a rarity at the award ceremony on Saturday. A helper said it was 2G or 3G everywhere, so she hadn’t thought about it. As a helper, however, she had a role model function and therefore always wore a mask.

The journey to Wengen also caused criticism. The only way to get to the mountain village is by train. The problem with this: Due to the numerous drinks consumed by the travelers, hardly a mask was worn correctly, the beer had to be drunk somehow.
