Over 6000 injured – cycling is more risky than riding a motorcycle

More and more Viennese are making their way (9 percent) by bike. However, this increases the risk of an accident.

There were 687,000 more cyclists (an increase of 14.7%) in Vienna in 2020. However, more cyclists on the roads also means a higher risk of accidents. In terms of the risk of accidents, cycling in this country is even more risky than riding a motorcycle and also significantly more dangerous than driving a car.

In Vienna alone, more than 6,000 cyclists were injured last year. If only the accidents reported to the police are taken into account, this is around 1100 injured people per year. While around 1,000 were injured in 2018, the number rose to 1,266 in 2020.

Solo accident and crossing accident
These two causes make up the largest proportion of road accidents. Motor vehicles are also involved in a collision in three-quarters of all cases. Dooring, that is, the careless opening of car doors with the consequences of injury to cyclists, is also common. In addition, the speed is decisive.

We give tips on how to prevent accidents:

  • Take particular care with vehicles that want to turn right
  • Be careful with tram rails
  • Sufficient distance to parked cars
  • Cell phone and earplugs prefer to stay in your pocket
