Who heard it: Two Bundeswehr Eurofighters practiced a supersonic flight over Carinthia. The resulting sound wave caused the typical “bang”.
The Eurofighter pilots practiced intercepting a suspicious aircraft in a maneuver between Mauterndorf and Hirt on Monday morning. The planes were traveling at speeds of up to 2,000 kilometers per hour and broke the sound barrier. The sound wave was clearly noticeable to residents in the regions. Supersonic flight requires appropriate training and such scenarios are therefore practiced regularly. In the past few days there has been repeated training in Austrian airspace. The flights take place over sparsely populated areas and not during rest periods in order to keep noise pollution as low as possible.
