“Overkill” on wife – 19 stitches: mother-in-law demands death penalty

“I would have preferred him to kill me” – a broken mother chokes up in tears during her daughter’s murder trial. The husband (35) fatally injured her with 19 (!) knife stabs. In court in Vienna, he too is scarred by the cruel crime.

It is an unusual picture in the Vienna regional court: surrounded by judicial guards and paramedics, the defendant lies motionless on a stretcher in the hearing room. The officers are still armed in and in front of the hall – probably more to protect the 35-year-old. The crime he is accused of is “extremely cruel.” He killed his wife with 19 knife wounds on July 3rd. The prosecutor wants to spare the jury images: “What you are going to hear is bad enough.” Because the 28-year-old had expressed intentions to break up and that she had met another man, the Syrian completely freaked out. “He decided to solve the matter for himself” – shortly before the bloodbath he sent the children to the park with their aunt to play. Mother had to listen to her daughter die Shortly after the man pulled out a kitchen knife in the apartment they shared in Vienna-Ottakring, his wife called her mother for help: “During the phone call, the defendant stabbed the victim – 19 times! I repeat: 19 times,” the prosecutor explains the cruelty. “What should I do with a woman who doesn’t love me?” he told the police after the crime. Why is he now being pushed motionless on a stretcher into the courtroom? After being stabbed numerous times, he threw himself from the roof of the house. Because: “I would prefer to be dead myself,” he repeatedly said to the defense attorneys Manfred Arbacher-Stöger and Lukas Hruby. “He doesn’t sugarcoat anything about what he did. But when someone stabs you 19 times, you have to imagine the desperation. We lawyers call it overkill,” Arbacher-Stöger tries to explain to the jury – whose faces show deep dislike. “If only he had a bit of conscience …” Which quickly turned into pity when the mother of the murdered woman entered the hearing room – talking about the terrible last phone call with her daughter. How she immediately got into the car with her son, drove to the apartment and a neighbor there alerted the police. In tears on the witness stand: “He is not a normal person. If only he had a bit of conscience… He didn’t think about the children, didn’t think about his family. We are all dead. We are just empty bodies. I would have preferred him to kill me. My children are already grown up, they don’t need me anymore.” Her daughter’s little ones are only 3, 4 and 7 years old…The private representatives are demanding 5,000 euros in grief compensation for the family and the costs of the funeral – the connection will be made fully recognized. Before she leaves the hall, the 47-year-old sobs: “I loved this criminal as much as I loved my own child. But I would like them to sentence him to the death penalty because that would be fair.” In Austria, of course, excluded. Nevertheless, if convicted, he faces up to life in prison for murder. A verdict is expected late this afternoon.
