While the newest ninja heroine, Kiriko, was unveiled in detail during the Tokyo Game Show 2022Blizzard also took the opportunity to show the official Battle Pass Season 1 content. Indeed, as of October 4, Overwatch 2 will be available in free-to-play and will therefore offer a Battle Pass system to reward players with skins and even characters. Of course, like any BP like on Fortnite for example or Genshin Impact, a premium version will be available with even more rewards. A logical choice of F2P but the details communicated do not please everyone…
Unlock Kiriko at Battle Pass Tier 55?!
What is currently debated on social networks is none other than the means of obtaining Kiriko, the new support and her blue fox. All Overwatch 1 owners will get it for free when Overwatch 2 launches. Players purchasing the Premium Pass will also be able to get it from the start without having to play for hours. On the other hand, new players wishing to remain entirely free-to-play will obviously have to reach the level 55 of the Battle Pass in order to recover Kiriko! Suffice to say that it will take more than fifty hours of play to achieve this goal.
On the web, opinions are divided since Season 1 of OW2 will still offer free heroes like sojourn and the Queen of Junkertown even if you are a new player. But as AlphaCast points out on Twitter, you will probably have to checkout or play even more hours to hope to unlock heroes in the next seasons.
Be careful however, it is possible that the image is only a simple concept art for the moment even if many sources like Gamespot have used it and that it comes from Blizzard.
Season 1 content and new monetization
In addition to the Battle Pass, Season 1 also includes other Overwatch 2 content. Here’s all you need to remember:
- Start of Battle Pass Season 1 with Sojourn and Junkerqueen to get for free,
- All the new features of OW2 with 5v5 PvP, new maps, push mode, crossplay etc.
- A new event from October 25 to November 8, 2022 “Junkenstein’s revenge: the wrath of the bride”
- Kiriko, new heroine, to unlock for free or by leveling up,
- Of the weekly challenges to earn Overwatch coins and spend them in the shop, which also changes every week.
If we do not yet have the exact price of the new currency that will have to be spent in the game (or not), it is therefore very clear now that the economic model of OW2 will work with a free or premium Battle Pass that it will be necessary to buy, and a shop with additional cosmetics purchasable with coins that can either be obtained by playing or paid for with real money.
