Overwatch 2: Server status, queue… Why can’t you play?


Since 8:00 p.m. (and therefore with a small hour in advance), the Overwatch 2 servers are available. They were activated in waves until becoming fully operational at 9:00 p.m. Finally… “operational” is a big word since the queues are endless for most players. Rest assured, this is absolutely normal and you will have to wait a few minutes for places to become available. Unfortunately, even passing this queue, you might encounter some errors.

We obviously expected it: with such a big launch, the Overwatch 2 servers are not holding up. While some streamers and other gamers can already check out Kiriko and test out the Battle Pass, a much larger percentage of internet users are currently stuck in queues. The solution ? Wait.

Unfortunately, even patience may not pay off since after long minutes, you may well have the error message “connection failed” and you will then have to quit the game and then restart it.

Having trouble entering the required phone number?

Once you’ve updated Overwatch to Overwatch 2 (or directly downloaded the game), when you click “Play”, a message will appear asking if you’ve added your phone number yet. This step is mandatory now that the game has become free-to-play and is part of a security system.

If you have already installed an Authenticator: you are still obliged to give your telephone number. For it :

  1. Launch Battle.net (PC application) or the game on consoles,
  2. When the message “Add your phone number” appears, click on “add”,
  3. On PC this will send you directly to the battle.net site and you will need to enter your date of birth,
  4. On consoles, you can scan a QR Code with your phone to go to this same site and fill out the form,
  5. Then enter your phone number (without area code, it will be added by itself),
  6. You should then receive a security code by SMS which you will then have to enter on the battle.net site to validate the steps

If you do not receive the SMS with the code, check that your phone is currently able to receive the messages but know that you are not alone: ​​many players are in the same situation on most Blizzard games. According to some posts from the battle.net forums, admins are on the spot but still don’t understand why some people don’t receive sms (operators being different). Restarting the phone, removing the SPAM option from SMS, the “chat features” etc… are solutions that can work but not for everyone.

Update : having myself had the bug of the SMS not received with the code, here is what I did to make it work:

  • I went to my Battle.net account settings,
  • Confidentiality tab: scroll down to find the “communication preferences” section,
  • Absolutely uncheck all the boxes and especially the one called “push notification”,
  • Save the new settings and refresh the page (F5),
  • Now recheck the “push notification” box,
  • Download the Authenticator application on your smartphone,
  • Login to it with your Battle.net account,
  • Follow the steps (dates of birth and phone number),
  • You should now receive the SMS! (good luck now for the queue).

Have you lost all your progress?

You are not alone there again. This is a known problem since the launch of the game on October 4: all your progress has disappeared, your skins, your golden weapons… You even have to re-unlock certain characters in the case of some players. The developers are obviously on the spot to correct this and ensure that all players recover their data.

When Overwatch 2 launches on October 4, you’ll need to merge your BattleNet account in order to recover your progress and the skins you unlocked on the first game. This does not concern all players but here is how to avoid a bad surprise or loss of data.
