After the launch of Overwatch 2 multiplayer in early access on October 4, Overwatch, the first of its name, will no longer be available.

As everyone expected, Overwatch 2 will not be just a new iteration in the Overwatch franchise. The future title will entirely replace Overwatch, the current game, at launch. In fact, current owners of Overwatch will only have just download a patch and their game will become Overwatch 2, with all the changes associated with multiplayer. For example, the game will change to a 5v5 format and will introduce new character balancing. The mode promised PvE campaign is planned for 2023.

Clarification was given by the game director overwatch 2, Aaron Kellerin a reddit post on the occasion ofan FAQ. He said the launch of the game October 4 marks the start of Early Access. He added: “We use the term Early Access to indicate that this is just the start of many new things to come to the game..ยป

The desire to replace the original Overwatch mainly comes from new free-to-play business model. With larger content updates arriving seasonally, the existence of the first installment of Overwatch has very little interest for Blizzard.
