OVHcloud attacks Microsoft in Brussels for abuse of dominant position

OVHcloud has filed an antitrust complaint against Microsoft with the European Commission. In the viewfinder of the northern host, the business practices of the American giant to gain ground in the rapidly expanding cloud market.

Microsoft is not going to reduce its lobbying investments in the European district of Brussels anytime soon. And for good reason: the American giant is the subject of a complaint filed by OVHcloud with the European Union competition supervisory authority, according to the wall street journal. Two other companies are supporting the northern company in its approach, but their identity has not been revealed.

With this antitrust complaint, OVHcloud wants to denounce Microsoft’s business practices, deemed anti-competitive by the Roubaix-based company, to gain ground in the rapidly expanding cloud market. The French group, which went public last October, believes that the Redmond firm enjoys a dominant position with its suite of office software, which gives it an unrivaled advantage to crush the competition. “Microsoft undermines fair competition and limits consumer choice in the market for cloud computing services”assures OVHcloud in a press release.

5% growth for OVHcloud, almost 50% for Azure

According to Synergy Research Group, US providers Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud capture 69% of the European cloud computing market. At the level of European suppliers, who share the crumbs, OVHcloud comes in second place with a market share of 1%, behind Deutsche Telekom (2%).

In the third quarter of 2021 alone, Microsoft’s cloud activities generated $20.7 billion in revenue, while OVHcloud has to settle for an annual turnover of 663 million euros. The northern group’s revenues increased by 5% over one year, while the global market grew by more than 30%. For Microsoft’s cloud branch, this progression even flirted with 50% in 2021. Something to annoy OVHcloud, which believes that it cannot fight on equal terms…
