P50E: Huawei declines its expensive P50 Pro smartphone in a more affordable version

Huawei declines its P50 series in a slightly more accessible version. The P50E offers a complete photo block at a much lower price than that of the P50 Pro launched in Europe.

Despite its good performance and photography skills, Huawei’s P50 Pro suffers from the absence of Google Mobile Services and 5G, at a time when smartphones at comparable prices (above 1000 €) do not suffer no compromise. The Chinese brand is trying in the form of a parade to launch a more affordable version of its device, the P50E, at least in its national market.

The smartphone, a little more compact with its 6.5-inch (90 Hz) OLED screen, however, retaining a definition of 1220 x 2700 pixels, swaps the curvaceous design of its predecessor for a flat screen and back. The P50e is also equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chip in its 5G version, flanked by 8 GB of RAM; it succeeds the Snapdragon 888 with a 4G modem. In the radius of the changes, we note the disappearance of the wireless charge, but also the reduction in the capacity of its battery: if the accumulator of the P50 Pro displays 4360 mAh, that of the P50E is satisfied with 4100 mAh, always with the fast charging at 66W.

Finally, the smartphone has a rather interesting photo module. It retains the main 50 megapixel sensor from the P50 Pro (f / 1.8 optics, laser autofocus and stabilization) and the ultra wide-angle with 13 Mpx sensor. The 64 Mpx sensor with its 90 mm equivalent periscopic lens of the P50 Pro is absent, but gives way to a 12 Mpx version associated with a 125 mm equivalent optic offering 5x magnification. On the other hand, the 40 Mpx monochrome sensor of the P50 Pro disappears.

While the P50 Pro still costs €1199, its version is announced in China from 4088 yuan, or around €580 (excluding VAT). It is offered there under Harmony OS 2, an operating system still awaited in Europe. In this market, Huawei still prefers the version open-source of Android accompanied by its own mobile services.
