Pain in the left lower abdomen can have many causes. We have summarized the most important.

Pain in the left lower abdomen can be triggered by various diseases and causes. In any case, you should have the complaints clarified by a doctor!

An immediate visit to the doctor or the emergency room should be made if you have the following symptoms:

  • Strong pain
  • Bloody bowel movement
  • fever
  • Yellow skin
  • Swollen belly
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Permanent nausea / vomiting 

Pain in the lower abdomen: possible causes 

Gas in the digestive tract

The formation of gas is normal during digestion. Among other things, gas-producing foods , smoking or food intolerances can also promote gasformation. If the condition persists and other symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, blood in bowel movements or heartburn are added, a doctor must be consulted!

Indigestion

Symptoms of indigestion usually manifest in the upper abdomen, but can also be felt in the lower abdomen. See a doctor if the pain or symptoms such as bloating, nausea, heartburn or regurgitation worsen.

Diverticulum 

These are small pouches that develop from weak points of the intestinal wall and bulge outward. If several such protuberances occur, it is called diverticulosis . A diverticulitis treatment yielded tearing or ignition of these bags. 

Possible symptoms can be:

  • nausea
  • Vomit
  • stomach pain
  • fever
  • You may also experience constipation or diarrhea

Treatment can be with a change in diet, antibiotics or surgery.

Hernia

In a hernia, abdominal viscera pass through the tissue or muscle in the groin. Causes can be  heavy lifting or severe coughing .

An inguinal hernia can manifest itself among other things by pain and an increasing curvature. It should be consulted in any case a doctor!

Kidney stones

If a kidney stone moves in the kidney or in the ureter, it can cause very severe pain. The pain mainly occurs in the side under the ribs or in the back.

Typical symptoms include:

  • red-colored, cloudy or smelling urine
  • frequent urination with pain
  • fever
  • chills
  • Nausea and vomiting

Again, you must be treated by a doctor!

Attention: Severe pain can also be triggered by shingles , which is usually noticeable by an additional red rash!

Pain in the left lower abdomen in women

In women, the pain in the left lower abdomen may additionally have the following reasons:

  • Pelvic inflammation: infection of the reproductive system
  • Ectopic pregnancy : A fertilized egg has taken root within the fallopian tube
  • Period pain : Period-related convulsions
  • Ovarian Twist: Twisting of the ovary 
  • Endometriosis : Chronic disease in which tissue similar to the uterine lining forms outside the uterus
  • Ovarian cyst : A broken cyst can cause severe pain

In general, the pain can also occur on the right side! 

Pain in the left lower abdomen in men

  • Inguinal hernia: Occurs more frequently in men
  • Testicular torsion: twisting of the testicle
