Pakistan: at least 20 dead, including 11 children, in a road accident

At least 20 people, the majority of them young children, were killed and 14 injured when a minibus crashed on a road damaged by summer floods in southern Pakistan, Pakistani police said on Friday. .

Among the dead are 11 children aged 2 to 8, most likely traveling on their parents’ laps, local police official Khadim Hussain told AFP.

The vehicle ended up in a deep ditch filled with water “on a road that had been washed away by floods” in Sindh province, he said, adding that the driver had “not seen the signal indicating the detour onto the road”.

Fatal accidents are very common in transport in Pakistan due to poor roads, poorly maintained vehicles and reckless driving. A third of the country was under water after the catastrophic floods that hit Pakistan this summer. More than 1,700 people were killed, eight million displaced and infrastructure suffered massive damage.
