Newspaper: Israeli bullet killed journalist

In May, an al-Jazeera journalist was killed in fighting between Palestinians and the Israeli army. The incident caused consternation, but it also prompted mutual recriminations. An analysis by the “New York Times” now blames Israel’s army.
According to a New York Times investigation presumably fired by Israeli soldiers. The newspaper reports that it was probably released from the direction of an Israeli military vehicle.
According to the investigation, there were no armed Palestinians near the journalist. This contradicts the Israeli army’s theory that the journalist could have been accidentally killed by a soldier who was about to fire on a Palestinian gunman. The US newspaper also admitted that there was no evidence that an Israeli soldier could have recognized the woman or the word “press” on her protective vest and shot her intentionally.
The well-known journalist from the TV station Al-Jazeera died in May during an Israeli military operation in Jenin in the northern West Bank. According to the Israeli army, there had been fierce gun battles with militant Palestinians in Jenin beforehand. The Palestinian Attorney General blamed Israel and accused the soldiers of deliberately killing the woman.
Israel’s army, after an internal investigation, denied the allegations of premeditation. The journalist was not shot on purpose. According to the army, it is not clear where the fatal shot came from. The Palestinian leadership rejected a joint investigation into the case.
Abu Akleh’s death had sparked international outrage and protests. For its investigation, the “New York Times” evaluated, among other things, videos and conducted interviews with witnesses. In addition, experts would have calculated the distance that the deadly bullet must have covered using an acoustic analysis.
