The Palestinian authorities have qualified as murder the death of Shireen Abu Akleh, who was covering an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank.
Israel initially suggested that Palestinian fire may have been involved, but some officials have since said they could not rule out that Israeli fire killed her.
The UN Security Council strongly condemned the murder and called for an “immediate, thorough, transparent, fair and impartial investigation”.
Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior Palestinian Authority official, said on Twitter that the authority would welcome the participation of all international bodies in its investigation.
The Palestinians, however, rejected an offer from Israel to cooperate with the investigation.
Israeli police said on Saturday that they had tried “to organize a calm and dignified funeral (…) and had coordinated the funeral arrangements with his family. Unfortunately, hundreds of rioters tried to sabotage the ceremony and go after the police.”
Internal Security Minister Omer Barlev said he had been appointed to a commission to conduct “a thorough investigation into what happened during the funeral, in order to draw lessons from the event”.
The conclusions, according to the police, will be presented in the coming days.
