Balcony power plants are popular – but aesthetically often debatable. Especially in large residential buildings, when one balcony power plant is lined up after the next, architects and usually also landlords are worried: the once planned look of the building is destroyed.
A solution could be provided in the future by windows that produce electricity with the help of embedded solar cells. There are already some craft projects as well as promising professional solutions that have not yet been able to gain widespread acceptance.
Panasonic has now announced the development of new perovskite solar cells and presented a corresponding prototype in the form of a window. Double advantage: The innovation not only produces electricity, but also filters out harmful UV light. The transparent modules, whose tint level can be adjusted, can also be used as facade elements and thus significantly increase the electricity production of public buildings or residential buildings.
The modules, which have been in development for years, are now being used in a newly constructed building in the “Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town” model city in Japan and tested under everyday conditions for at least a year.
