Paradise Hotel: These dating formats can score worldwide

From Tuesday RTL shows the second season of the dome show "Paradise Hotel" on free TV. These dating formats are also successful worldwide.

RTL is showing the second season of the TVNow original "Paradise Hotel" in a free TV premiere on Tuesday (June 30, 11 p.m.). With different games and wet evenings ten singles get to know each other in a luxury villa. New singles keep moving in, in return other singles and sometimes couples have to leave the "Paradise Hotel". In the end, the winning couple share the prize money of 20,000 euros – or a partner goes home alone with the prize. The show is based on the US original, which was first broadcast on Fox in 2003. According to "Variety", the format has been adapted in more than 18 countries. These dating shows are also internationally successful.

"The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette"

The most famous dating show "The Bachelor" was first produced in 2002 as "The Bachelor" for the US broadcaster ABC, there are now 23 seasons. The concept: a bachelor gets to know single women in group and individual dates. At the "Night of Roses" he awards roses to his favorites – until the last rose is left for his dream woman. The show has its own version in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, India and Romania, among others. In 2003 the dome show also found its way onto German TV. RTL celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2020. The broadcaster also developed German versions of the US offshoot "The Bachelorette", in which a single lady is looking for her dream man, and "Bachelor in Paradise", in which former candidates of both dome shows once again go on a love search.

"Prince Charming"

"Prince Charming" can be understood as another "Bachelor" branch. In the dating format, a gay man is looking for a partner. The show celebrated its premiere in 2016 as "Finding Prince Charming" on the US pay-TV broadcaster Logo, moderated by ex-NSYNC member Lance Bass (41) and Robert Sepúlveda Jr. (37) went looking for a dream man. In October 2019, TVNow chose his own prince: Nicolas Puschmann (29) found the right partner in Lars Tönsfeuerborn (30) – "Prince Charming" was also a success on free TV.

"Adam is looking for Eve"

"Dating Naked" is better known in Germany under the RTL show "Adam sucht Eva – Stranded in paradise". On a tropical island, singles meet completely naked and get to know each other while living together on the island. The format was implemented in several countries in 2014: the Netherlands, the USA, Australia, Germany and Spain. Finland or Italy followed in 2016. The fifth season ran in Germany in 2018. The sixth season of the reality format is to be broadcast on RTLzwei in 2020.

"Take me out"

"If he is your man, leave the lamp on. Four couples put their relationship to the test on the show – by getting to know single men and women separately. They are accompanied by cameras, and the recordings are then shown to their partner. After two weeks in "paradise" the couples meet again, they have to decide whether their love still has a chance. The experiment was implemented in 24 international formats, initially in the Netherlands as "Blind Vertrouwen" (2001). In the same year "Temptation Island" also started in the USA.

"Love Island"

Also in the format "Love Island", the participants move into a villa for almost three weeks and at best get together in pairs. If you stay alone, you have to go. The winning couple will receive 50,000 euros. In Germany, RTLzwei shows the dome show that originally came from Great Britain (since 2005). Initially, the show was shot there with celebrities, but was reissued in 2015 with unknown people. In 2018 the show won a BAFTA award. It is not until 2021 that the ITV format will be broadcast again for corona security reasons. In this country, work continues on the fourth season.

"Beauty & The Nerd"

It is a dating experiment in which the end result is more tempting: in "Beauty & The Nerd", seven confident beauties and seven lonely outsiders meet in a dream villa and fight as couples for 50,000 euros – including a makeover. As "Beauty and The Geek" the show ran from 2005 to 2008 in the USA, produced by Ashton Kutcher (42), among others. The shipment still exists in Croatia, Italy and Germany (ProSieben), there have also been branches in Australia, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia or Israel.

"First Dates"

VOX has been showing "First Dates – A Table for Two" since 2018 (also via TVNow). TV chef Roland Trettl (48) invites singles to dinner, who get to know each other better with culinary delights and test whether a second date will follow. The dating show celebrated its premiere in the UK in 2013, and the "first dates" concept has now been implemented in around 20 countries. These include Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, Canada, Spain, the USA, Brazil and South Africa. Since 2020 VOX has also shown the branch "First Dates Hotel", in which getting to know each other is extended by a hotel stay.
