The arrival of Apple’s M1 chips sounded the death knell for the highly efficient BootCamp, which allowed dual installation of Windows and macOS on the same Apple machine. Parallels took the opportunity to ensure its leading position with a novelty that will be appreciated.

Mac computers are very popular for their design, speed of execution and ease of use. They have many qualities that users often praise, but since their own operating system (macOS) does not work like Windows, the software of one does not work on the other. It is to circumvent this limit that applications allowing to run Windows on a Mac have emerged, like Parallels Desktop.

Responsiveness, a major asset of Parallels Desktop

It is to run professional software (or games) that installing Windows on Mac makes sense. This feature was offered by several application publishers when Apple computers were powered by Intel processors (like many PCs).

This commonality made simulating Microsoft’s system easy, but since the move to Apple Silicon, things have gotten tougher. Parallels Desktop was then able to get out of the game and quickly offer to run an ARM version (as opposed to traditional 64 or 32-bit architectures) that Microsoft had just presented in beta.

However, downloading this version of Windows required having a “Windows Insider” account and performing a lot of manipulations. In its newest version, Parallels Desktop offers one-click Windows installation, and it will do the same for some Linux distributions.

An update that focuses on productivity

An article released on August 9 presents what’s new in Parallels Desktop Update 18. The leader in Windows simulation on macOS promises “ the most advanced Windows experience on Mac to run more than 200,000 applications, software and games combined “. For the publisher, the challenge also lies in monitoring machine innovations and the evolution of macOS.

The optimization of the M1 Ultra found on the Mac Studio is also on the agenda, with the commitment ” Windows speed increased by 96% on the chip. To continue supporting hardware innovations, ProMotion management is also required. This technology, which adapts the refresh rate of the screens to make the most of the image and the battery, makes it possible to reach a rate of 120 Hz.

Finally, the publisher indicates that the experience is improved for game-play on Mac. The management of the controllers has been revised in particular to be able to switch from one OS to another in order to play without a hitch. The Windows UI interface for video games and video screen capture has, for its part, been optimized and offers a smoother rendering.
