Paralympic Games Beijing 2022: the moving journey of Arthur Bauchet, the first French gold medalist

This Saturday March 5, 2022, the young Arthur Bauchet offered his first gold medal to France during the Downhill event at the Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing.

At only 21 years old, Arthur Bauchet already has an impressive track record. The young man who has been skiing since the age of 5 has already won gold in giant slalom in 2017 in Tarvisio, four silver medals at the Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, and offered its France’s first gold medal on Saturday March 5, 2022 during the Downhill event at the Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Awards that are all the more prestigious when you know that the young man living in Briançon was diagnosed at the age of 10 from the spastic paraparesis. This rare disease affects his central nervous system and causes him pain and tremors.

Arthur Bauchet also confided to the Sunday newspaper that he had initially been forced to quit soccer : “After practice, when my muscles cooled down, it was impossible to get up and walk. My parents had to come to carry me. So we quickly understood that it was going to be complicated to continue. Now, I can’t even run, so it’s easy to see!“.

Arthur Bauchet: “Whatever I do, the disease will intensify”.

Today Arthur Bauchet is science student at the University of Grenoble to become a biomechanical engineer. He is also fortunate to be able to devote himself exclusively to her passion since 2018, as he explained to the Sunday newspaper : “I got visibility that brought me new partners and it changed my life. I can dedicate myself 100% to skiing, a dream job“.

And if he made France dream on Saturday March 5, 2022, the young man does not intend to stop there. Even if its disease is progressivehe remains optimistic and confided that he wanted above all to enjoy the present moment: “I tell myself that I have to take advantage, right now, because whatever I do, the disease will intensify. If one day I have to be in a wheelchair, well, I will be in a wheelchair. And I will still find adaptations to do what I love. Being in this world of disabled sports, I understood that life is not only meaningful standing“. A beautiful philosophy that will certainly take him very far.
