All parents have certainly experienced it. If the child is dawdling in the morning when it should actually already be on the way to school, it is easy to lose patience. After all, the child should be in the classroom on time. So the youngsters are taken directly to school by car. Just one reason why parent taxis are on the road.
But now too many cars stop in front of the school. This leads to problems in three Aargau municipalities – even to dangerous situations. Especially for children who walk to school.
“As a result, the other children’s view of the approaching vehicles is blocked when they cross the street,” says Hans Dössegger, mayor of the municipality of Seon to “Aargauer Zeitung”. This has often led to tricky situations. Now the three communities have had enough of the morning car rides.
Bans on stopping in front of the schools
This is the case in Seon, where the mayor has already taken action. In a section of the school and sports facilities, a parking ban was imposed on both sides. According to Dössegger, there were no objections. This means that the ban is legally binding. During the weekdays, cars are no longer allowed to stop in front of the school between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The municipality of Kölliken has also been working on increasing road safety around the school for some time. No wonder: in the winter of 2018, three children were injured in car accidents. Among other things, this resulted in a poster campaign with the subject “Parent taxis, no thanks!”
Number of parent taxis still high
According to the parish clerk of Kölliken, Felix Fischer, the awareness-raising efforts of the community and the school would have at least temporary effects. “These efforts will continue, but they cannot solve the situation on their own,” he told the “Aargauer Zeitung”.
Because: The frequency of parent taxis remains at a high level. That’s exactly why no stopping signs will soon be put up in Kölliken. Just like in Seon, cars will no longer be allowed to stop in front of the school during the week. With one exception: the school bus. (ced)
