Gaël Monfils announced this Friday on Twitter to be forfeited for the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000 which begins this Monday in the capital. The French tennis star wants to rest to be fully fit for the 2023/2024 season.

The French N.1 Gaël Monfils will not participate in the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000 which begins on Monday because he feels “limited in his movements”, he announced on Twitter on Friday.

The 36-year-old Parisian hasn’t played since suffering a foot injury in August. He also became a father for the first time this month.

Gaël Monfils said: “Hi friends, as you have seen this week on stream, I am still limited in my movements on the court. I will therefore not be able to defend my chances at the Rolex Paris Masters. I will take advantage of the end of the year to prepare for the following season.”

French people at the rendezvous

There will be at least four French people on the starting line (Adrian Mannarino, Richard Gasquet, Gilles Simon, Arthur Rinderknech) thanks to the wild cards awarded by the organizers. They may be joined this weekend by players from qualifying.

The former world No.6 (in 2016) has not played in competition since August 12 and his retirement in the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Montreal against the Briton Jack Draper. Gaël Monfils also became a father for the first time a fortnight ago, his wife, the Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina, having given birth to a little girl named Skaï.

The French however assured Friday in his message on Twitter that he was going to “take advantage of the end of the year to (get) ready for the following season”.
