Paris calls on Lebanese officials to facilitate the “rapid election” of a president


The head of French diplomacy Catherine Colonna on Tuesday called on Lebanese political leaders to “assume their responsibilities» and allow «the quick electionof a new president in this country, deprived of a head of state for almost two months.

Our concern is that the Lebanese leaders assume their responsibilities to facilitate the rapid election of a new president in Lebanon and the formation of a full-fledged government capable of carrying out the reforms of which Lebanon has a dire needshe said at a press conference after a regional summit in Jordan.

Lebanon without a president since November 1

Lebanon, in full economic collapse, has been without a president since November 1, and led by a resigning government. The deputies have already met ten times without succeeding in electing a successor to President Michel Aoun, because of the deep differences between the camp of the powerful pro-Iranian Hezbollah and its opponents.

In his speech at the conference, President Emmanuel Macron also underlined the need to address the crises in the region, including Iraq, Lebanon and Syria, with Iran enjoying the dominating influence there.
