Paris: influencer Benjamin Ledig sentenced after his crop-top dance video in a church

Justice sentenced Benjamin Ledig, who had filmed himself on social networks dancing lasciviously in a church in Paris.

The young man, who presents himself as an “influencer”, was found guilty of non-pecuniary damage by an interim order issued on April 22. The priest of the parish to which the Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis church belongs, in which the facts took place, published a forum on the Aleteia site in reaction to this condemnation.

Father Vivarès thus indicated that his decision to bring the case to justice was not based on the video itself (a provocative dance in a crop-top in the chapel), but on the place where it was made, without permission.

“Attack on the religious assignment of places”

The Paris court referred to the 1905 law guaranteeing the separation of Churches and State, which states that “any activity other than worship must be authorized by the priest” in charge of the operation of a religious building. . But that was not the case.

In addition, it was held against the young man that he refused to remove the videos from his TikTok account (he made a second, in the same place). Considering this, the justice considered that he had “manifestly undermined the religious assignment of the places” and had “necessarily caused moral damage” to the priest. Consequently, he must pay him 2,500 euros in compensation for this damage, plus 2,000 euros for legal costs, according to the interim order consulted by CNEWS.

By deploring and condemning the numerous threats and insults that Benjamin Ledig received following his videos, Father Vivarès insisted on recalling that all places of worship in France are sanctuaries “and that nothing can be organized there without the agreement explicit and preliminary of (their) persons in charge”. “Let us respect these places and this peace which are offered to us and which our country and its inhabitants need so much”, he concluded in his tribune.
