Socialist dissident Martine Froger was elected deputy for Ariège this Sunday, during the partial legislative elections, with 60% of the vote. She was facing Bénédicte Taurine, the candidate of Nupes. A new setback for the left alliance, more divided than ever between supporters and opponents of Nupes.

“A lamentable political trick”. Acidic commentary by Jean-Luc Mélenchon after the clear defeat of Bénédicte Taurine in the second round of the partial legislative elections of Ariège. The candidate, supported by Nupes, was largely overtaken by the dissident socialist Martine Froger, elected with 60% of the vote. This election further widens the gap between supporters and detractors of the left alliance.

“A victory for the real and republican left” for some…

With on one side the supporters of the victorious dissident Martine Froger. We find there Carole Delga, Anne Hidalgo or Bernard Cazeneuve, all opposed to the Nupes. “It’s a victory for the real and republican left in the face of the populist excesses of the far left”, reacts the new elected on Twitter. A position on which aligns the mayor of Montpellier, Michaël Delafosse, guest of Europe 1 noon this Monday. “I believe that our democracy needs, on the left, candidates who stay very far from the noise, the fury and the excess but who remain determined, resolute in their conviction of socialists. A republican, secular left, to which I believe”.

But this victory constitutes a heavy disavowal for Olivier Faure, boss of the PS and craftsman since the departure of the Left Alliance. He had also supported the rebellious Bénédicte Taurine. The defeat is bitter in the LFI ranks, because Martine Froger benefited from the support of Renaissance and right-wing parties in the second round.

… “The Opportunist Alliance of Gravediggers of the Left” for others

Manuel Bompard thus denounces “the opportunist alliance of the gravediggers of the left”, when Jean-Luc Mélenchon deplores “a lamentable political scheme”. The question of Martine Froger’s place in the Assembly is also divided. Valérie Rabault pleads to integrate it within the socialist group, against the opinion of the president of the group, Olivier Faure. The boss of the PS must finally face the insistent dissidence of his number two, the mayor of Rouen, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol.
