“Partygate” affair – Alcohol in Downing Street only allowed at formal meetings – News

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has issued new rules for dealing with alcohol at the seat of government.
  • Employees may now only consume alcohol in connection with the reception of international guests.
  • Boris Johnson’s rigid stance became unavoidable in view of the increasing political pressure in the so-called “Partygate” affair.

After the illegal celebrations in Downing Street during the corona pandemic, alcohol is to be largely banned in the British seat of government in the future.

“Employees are not permitted to consume alcohol in Number 10. The only exception is for formal events – visits by leading international politicians,” a government spokesman said. “Social events” are still allowed for employees – but only under the new rules. The Prime Minister has his seat at 10 Downing Street.

Stimulated, planned and covered up by those responsible

An investigation report published on Wednesday showed that there were repeated celebrations with excessive alcohol consumption in the seat of government during the corona lockdown.

Invitations to “Wine Time Fridays” were regularly sent by e-mail. The celebrations were suggested, planned and hushed up by those responsible. Johnson’s spokesman said: “The guidelines make it clear that excessive alcohol consumption or consumption that impairs judgment is not appropriate.”
