IFrance riots in order not to make any more revolution and dreams of revolution in order not to make reforms. It will probably always be like this and it is pointless to dream of a German- or Swedish-style compromise. We will never be Swiss or Scandinavian: only Gauls who are as nervous as they are immovable. We only go to the brink, through the convulsions, to take the small step forward that others have already taken without major jolts. Since I arrived in Paris at the age of 18, I have not known a single year without strikes, demonstrations, violence or thugs.
