Eyewitness kicked in the door to free those trapped
Eyewitness Thomas, who was at Stern on the night of the accident, reported something similar to the radio station “Antenne Steiermark”: “Soon the anteroom was completely on fire. I said: ‘Everyone out, out, out!’ I grabbed my wife and my friends ran after him.” On the neighboring Karmeliterplatz he kicked in a door to free those trapped. Why some guests were able to escape via the emergency exit, but others were not, is also currently the subject of investigations: “We are of course also taking a close look at the fire safety precautions,” says Fritz Grundnig.
