Noodles with minced meat sauce: Germans’ favorite food, but rather unknown in Italy

More

Spaghetti Bolognese is the Germans’ favorite dish – and doesn’t even exist in their home country of Italy. How can that be? Watch the video to see why, even in Bologna, spaghetti with meat sauce is never served on a plate!

Not fries, not currywurst, not pizza: The absolute favorite food in Germany has been spaghetti Bolognese for years. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a hungry kindergarten child or a stressed office worker in the company canteen: no other meal makes us full and happy again in one fell swoop, gives comfort and gives us back a few hearty bites of happiness from our childhood. It is all the more astonishing that Italians only shake their heads in horror or flee when they mention “Spaghetti Bolognese”.

That’s why the hack spaghetti doesn’t take place in Italy

Before there are any protests: Sure, of course it’s not impossible to find a plate of spaghetti bolognese anywhere in Italy. But these are absolutely exceptional phenomena, which are probably served primarily in restaurants that are tailored to the tastes of local German holidaymakers. But normally the popular noodles would not end up on an Italian’s plate. And that’s not a pure claim, it was even meticulously proven in 2015.

Pasta with minced meat sauce: searching for clues in Bologna

This is exactly what a British BBC television crew made: the journalists had traveled to Bologna, the birthplace of Bolognese by name alone, to track down the very best version of the sauce on the spot. An original Bolognese, so to speak, which is the absolute insider tip for the local Bolo connoisseurs – who wouldn’t be curious? But the camera team’s questions only produced shoulder shrugs, annoyed looks and repeated remarks: “There’s no such thing, mi scusi!”

The noodle does it

Of course, the minced meat sauce is not unknown in Italy – but with a few key differences that set it apart from the spaghetti Bolognese that the rest of the world loves more than anything. See in the video why the Italians don’t like this mixture of spaghetti and minced meat sauce – and what they serve instead!
