Microsoft’s latest round of Patch Tuesday fixes includes a fix for a bug that could cause some user data not to be erased after a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC reset.
This issue, initially discovered by Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Rudy Ooms in late February, caused some user data to still be readable in the “Windows.old” folder after performing a remote or local wipe of a Windows 10 or 11 device.
This issue affected Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H1; and Windows 10, version 20H2.
From workaround to fix
Microsoft had released a suggested workaround involving signing out of OneDrive or unlinking it before resetting a Windows device.
But today’s patches for Windows 11 and Windows 10 completely fix the problem.
Microsoft’s patch note states that “some devices may take up to seven days after installing this update to fully resolve the issue and prevent files from persisting after a reset.” For immediate effect, you can manually trigger Windows Update Troubleshooter by following the instructions given here. »
Windows Subsystem Update for Android
Microsoft also released today, March 8, an update for Windows 11 Subsystem for Android.
This update – Microsoft Store version 2203.40000.1.0 – is available to Insiders in all channels (Dev, Beta, and Release Preview). The Windows Subsystem for Android, along with the Amazon Android app store, allows users to run select Android games and apps on Windows 11.
Today’s update includes support for hardware decoding of H.264 video, various networking changes, better integration between the subsystem and various Windows email clients, improved scrolling through the Amazon Appstore and Kindle apps, etc.
New Windows 11 Features
Today’s Patch Tuesday fixes and updates should also bring Windows 11 users some of the new features Microsoft started previewing a few weeks ago, including the mentioned Android apps on Windows. above.
Classic customers can manually download new Windows 11 features starting February 15.
