Patent war: Nokia and Oppo sign the end of their conflict

The outcome comes at the right time. While OnePlus launches its last two flagships on the international scene, the ambitious OnePlus 12 and the more modest, but no less interesting 12R, the risks that could be incurred in the marketing of these smartphones are history. Nokia and Oppo – and by extension OnePlus -, the two telephone brands being united within the same entity in the BBK Electronics group, announce the end of the conflict which has opposed them for more than a year.

The origin of the dispute dates back to 2021, when the licensing agreement allowing Oppo to exploit patents signed by Nokia and linked to 5G technologies was expiring. The two mobility giants were unable to find a financial agreement to maintain their partnership, which led to a legal battle, the outcome of which did not go unnoticed. Oppo had to interrupt the sale of its products on the German market in the first half of 2023. The following summer, the company Yang Technology, which distributed the Oppo brand in France, announced the closure of its French offices, partly for the same reasons. reasons. Only OnePlus remained on the French market, which did not fall under the same commercial structure. It is also under its banner that BBK Electronics markets the Oppo Find N3, thus called OnePlus Open in France.

Series agreements at Nokia

Today’s agreement between Oppo and Nokia puts an immediate end to the legal dispute and covers “Nokia’s fundamental inventions in cellular technologiesspecifies the Finn. Nokia will receive payments from Oppo for a period of several years, with catch-up payments to cover the lack of payment during the dispute period., he adds. The exact amounts are subject to a confidentiality agreement, just as the exact duration of the new agreement signed between the two parties is not public. In any case, the operation completes a wave of financial agreements concluded over the past year. In January 2023, Nokia renewed the same type of contract with Samsung, and the telecom equipment manufacturer announced in early January 2024 that it had done the same with Honor.

Does this mean that Oppo will return to Germany and France in 2024? For now, the brand is content to congratulate itself on having closed this chapter with Nokia and recall its presence in around sixty countries. Little chance, therefore, of finding in the coming months the Find X7 Ultra made official in China at the very beginning of the year.
