Pay by smartwatch: It is possible with these watches

SMARTWATCH

Paying with a smartwatch is practical, but it is nowhere near as uncomplicated as with a cell phone. We’ll tell you with which watches it is possible and what you have to consider.

Carrying your wallet or mobile phone with you when jogging is annoying. But essential if you want to buy a bottle of water or a roll after the run, right? Not necessarily. Because with the right smartwatch you can not only record your training performance, but also pay for the purchase after the sport. This works like paying with a mobile phone without contact via NFC.

Which smartwatches allow contactless payment?

But while almost every mid-range cell phone now has an NFC chip installed and thus qualifies for contactless payment, things are different with smartwatches. Only a few models have the technical requirements, and unlike on the smartphone market, there are a lot of different payment services competing with each other.

You are usually tied to the service pre-installed by the manufacturer of the watch. While you can easily replace Samsung Pay with Google Pay on Samsung phones, it’s not that easy to do on many smartwatches. So when you buy the watch, you have to pay attention to the payment service used and check whether it works with your bank.

Below we tell you which smartwatches offer an integrated payment function and which service they use.

Apple

The Apple Watch has supported contactless payment since the first generation. However, this is only possible in connection with Apple Pay. The payment service from Cupertino does not work with every bank in Germany, but with the DKB, Deutsche Bank, Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken and Sparkasse the most important banks are on board.

Do I need an internet connection to pay by smartwatch?
