peak/off-peak hours, how can we optimize this offer to save money?

Faced with rising electricity prices, many citizens are considering reviewing their energy contract. Perhaps you opted for the peak/off-peak offer? Find out how to identify your time slot.

Electricity prices in France continue to see their prices increase. The Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, announced a new increase from 8.6% to 9.8% on February 1, 2024. In two years, prices have increased by around 44%. Faced with this increase, the review of electricity contracts becomes a necessity to preserve our budget. The “Peak Hours/Off-peak Hours” (HP/HC) option is seen as a solution to save money. To benefit from it, it is essential to subscribe to this paid option or to a specific contract. Consult the summary of the characteristics of your subscription on your electricity bill or check your electricity meter to find out if you are on the basic option where the price per kWh remains the same all year round.

How to find out your HP/HC times?

Contrary to popular belief, it is not EDF, but Enedis, manager of the electricity network in France, which defines the HP/HC schedules. These time slots are not selectable by the subscriber, but allocated arbitrarily depending on the locality and network operating conditions. A day includes eight off-peak hours, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., and sixteen peak hours, corresponding to peaks in demand. These time slots may vary from one subscriber to another in the same municipality. Check your invoice to see your allocated hours.

A really advantageous offer?

According to a November 2020 survey of “60 Million Consumers”, the HP/HC subscription was no longer as attractive as before. Subscribers lost on average €30 to €50 per year. To be truly beneficial, this option would require consumers to direct more than half of their daily consumption during off-peak hours.

Your profit therefore depends on your consumption habits. “The most energy-intensive devices must be operated 48% of the time during off-peak hours for the HP/HC option to be interesting,” explains the national energy mediator. To determine the tariff option best suited to your expenses, a free simulator is available. In these times of price increases, opting for the HP/HC option can prove strategic to optimize your energy expenses. Discover your schedule and make the choice that will allow you to control your budget while contributing to responsible consumption.
