Tim Jones, Gaming Director at Maze Theoryin fact spoke on the blog PlayStation in order to announce that Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom will be released on PSVR 2 in November 2023. A title renowned for the occasion in Peaky Blinders: The Royal Ransom Complete Editionand which will include improvements for the PS5 headset from Sony as well as all the additional content already available on other headsets. At Maze Theory, we easily get excited about the idea of telling a story in virtual reality. We think about how VR feels — using your hands to interact with the world, looking into the eyes of characters, marveling at vast buildings — and we use those feelings to immerse players in a story .
For Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom Complete Edition — a new standalone story set in the world of the hit TV series — we wanted players to feel like they had entered the criminal underworld of Birmingham and London in 1928. We relied on the tactile aspect of VR to help them build a close relationship with the world, and put themselves in the shoes of the character being played. While exploring this world, players repair period-specific radios, play darts, serve drinks in the famous Garrison pub, and use their trusty lighter to light up dark places… and start fires.
Since Peaky Blinders: King’s Ransom is a character-driven drama, we wanted players to experience the presence and acting of said characters in an intimate way that is only possible in VR. A notable example is the player’s first encounter with Tommy Shelby, played brilliantly by Cillian Murphy, who combines captured gameplay with dynamic NPC reactions that intervene based on the player’s interactions.
But most important to us was releasing players into environments that were grand from a distance — these 1920s factories look crazy in VR — while still being detailed up close. We’ve hidden narrative details throughout the world, and players are rewarded as they explore with a deeper understanding of the rich and complex world in which the story takes place.
- A whole new story
While the game should be satisfying for those familiar with the series’ compelling story, we wanted to tell a completely independent story. To achieve this end, we created several completely new characters, including the protagonist, Sammy Taylor, a veteran of the Great War who seeks to escape the firing squad. His only chance for redemption is to work for his childhood friend Tommy Shelby, and by extension his gang, the Peaky Blinders.
In the shoes of Sammy, players find themselves involved in a hunt which targets Winston Churchill’s Red Box: a briefcase which contains the identities of all British agents, all around the world. Although Sammy’s mission is to retrieve the Box for Churchill himself, enemy factions also seek it: for power, for money, for the opportunity to bring the country to its knees.
For the PS VR2 release of Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, we took advantage of the headset’s resolution and power to make the game even more beautiful, more exciting, and more immersive. Incredibly detailed environments are now rendered at an improved resolution, and lighting and textures have been perfected. For a game that relies so heavily on its atmosphere and sense of space, we’re really excited by the improvements we’ve been able to make to the PS VR2 version.
We also took advantage of PS VR2’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The story has its moments of high tension and explosive action, and the incredible sensations offered by the haptic feedback of PS VR2 make these dramatic moments even more powerful.
When Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom releases on PS VR2, it will be the Complete Edition, and the game will include all the additional content that is released, forever.
After completing the main story, players will be able to return to the game world in Free Roam mode, take on shooting galleries and combat challenges, and will be rewarded with item skins and player customization options.
But the most interesting thing is that the complete edition will also include seven narrative combat missions, which take place after the events of the main story. Trouble brews in Peaky Blinders territory and, once again, it’s up to Sammy to find out.
