What is a facial peel?

Peeling (or a kind of microdermabrasion) is a beauty treatment designed to "peel" the skin to renew the upper layers of the epidermis. It works overall like a scrub would. It is indeed a chemical process based on acids, carried out by a specialist (cosmetic doctor or dermatologist), which treats spots, certain scars (from acne for example), rosacea, but also small wrinkles. The peel involves a peeling of the skin to reduce the thickness of the surface layers of the skin. The complexion of the face will be more radiant. Removing the first layers of the skin will reactivate the natural production of collagen. New cells will form for a visibly fresher and more toned complexion.

Prepare your skin before treatment

The chemical peel requires some preparation before subjecting your skin to it. Your doctor will ask you to apply certain creams that he prescribes for you. During the sessions, he will monitor your skin for the duration of the action of the product, so that the result is homogeneous and that there is no risk of burns.

The different acid peels

Depending on the desired effect, there are three different peels, of different intensities: gentle (called superficial), medium and deep.

  • The gentle acid peel (or superficial) will allow you to restore radiance to your face. It works only on the superficial layers of the skin. The results provide a brighter complexion by tightening pores and removing blemishes. The treatment will make your skin peel, but in a fairly light manner. This technique can also be recommended for acne problems. It is advisable to do 3 to 6 sessions of 20 to 30 minutes every 10 to 15 days.
  • The average peel with acid is considered for people who want to erase some wrinkles, fine lines, scars and other facial imperfections. Youthful effect guaranteed!
After the treatment, it will look like you are sunburned. Your skin will turn brownish in the days following treatment. It is best to take 2-3 days if you are working out to make sure that the scabs formed disappear. The peeling will wear off after a week. Healing creams will be prescribed to you. Finally, it only requires one session of 30 to 45 minutes (or two, maximum).
  • The so-called "deep" peel is not recommended, because it is a very strong treatment. The concentration of acids is much higher. The effect is deeper and cell production more intense. This treatment then becomes much heavier.

Some doctors will prefer to opt for hospitalization and general anesthesia. A period of convalescence (15 days off on average) is recommended, because the skin of the face will be raw and the formation of edema is possible. Being much stronger, the skin will need time to regenerate completely. It takes about 6 months to get a final result.

Warning : It is not recommended for mixed-race, black and Asian skin because of a high risk of depigmentation.

Whatever type of peel you choose, UV exposure is strongly discouraged and the application of a high protection sunscreen is absolutely necessary (over a longer or shorter period depending on the intensity of the treatment).

This type of facial treatment is also not recommended for people suffering from heart problems, diabetes, kidney failure, problems with the lymphatic system, or even skin problems (herpes, eczema, etc.). And pregnant women are of course strongly advised to postpone their peel to a later date after giving birth.

How much does a peel cost?

Only cosmetic doctors or recognized dermatologists can perform this kind of procedure. Choose someone who is qualified and who you trust. This treatment is not reimbursed by Health Insurance. The costs incurred for this aesthetic medicine technique will be entirely at your expense.

For a gentle peeling treatment, it takes € 20 to € 100 per session. For a medium, prices can vary from 150 € to 500 €. For strong treatment, count the cost of hospitalization, the cost of anesthesia …

Cosmetic treatments for a "peeling" at home

There are also commercially available cosmetic treatments, the action of which is inspired by this chemical treatment. These peels are lighter than those performed in an office. They can easily be done at home, at home.

Some cosmetics can be used as a cure for a few days. We are thinking in particular of the Peeling Effect Revitalift Laser x3 ampoules from L’Oréal Paris, to be used over a period of 7 days. Sips in 10% glycolic acid (an ingredient used for chemical salon peels), these peeling-effect ampoules reduce dark spots, smooth the skin and help regain a beautiful glow. Nothing better for a facelift in just a week.

Other cosmetics, on the contrary, can be used over the long term, and become part of our daily skincare routine. Example with the Oxygen-Peel micro-peeling and exfoliating face lotion designed by Filorga Laboratories. To be used once a day, the product is suitable for all skin types and offers a "new skin" effect. The Oxygen-Peel lotion is enriched with 6 different acids. The perfect cocktail to gently exfoliate the skin, smooth out wrinkles and tighten pores. At the same time, we also find hyaluronic acid in the composition of the treatment, so as to also provide the moisturizing benefits that the epidermis so badly needs.

If your skin is more sensitive, opt for a face mask instead. So, once a week, pamper your skin with the Micro-Peeling Mask by Codage. Composed of AHA (fruit acids), BHA (salicylic acid) and fruit enzymes, it has it all. With a well thought-out vegan composition, the Micro-Peeling mask eliminates all accumulated impurities, dead skin, blackheads, then reduces small skin imperfections (fine lines, spots, scars, etc.). It allows the skin to regain all its beauty.

To note : the skin is sensitized during and after the use of these beauty products. So consider using a daytime moisturizer with sun protection to counter the harmful effects of UV rays on the skin.
