Pellets and Co. – Heating with wood has become significantly more expensive – News

Wood prices and processing costs have risen: pellets are 46 percent more expensive than a year ago. And schnitzel and logs are also very popular at the moment.

Not only the prices for the fossil fuels oil and gas have risen sharply. Even those who rely on alternative energies such as wood as fuel currently have to dig deeper into their wallets. Because the chopsticks made from pressed sawdust are 46 percent more expensive than they were a year ago.

We hear from heating manufacturers and suppliers that the demand for logs has risen sharply.

“In general, one can summarize that the increase is due to the higher production costs,” says Peter Lehmann, President of the “proPellets” association. In addition to processing, the wood is also more expensive.

In addition, almost 50 percent more pellet heating systems were built last year than in 2020. This has also increased the demand for pellets. Lehmann assumes that the price will not come down in the medium term, as the raw material wood is in too high demand in the current situation.

Reluctance to order pellets

Many owners of pellet heating systems were therefore initially reluctant to order pellets for their heating systems. But not only pellets, but also chips and logs, i.e. wood for the fireplace, are in great demand, says Andreas Keel, Managing Director of Holzenergie Schweiz.

“We hear from various producers and also from the suppliers of small log wood heating systems that the demand for log wood has increased significantly.” Logs are even exported to Germany at good prices. “That would have been unthinkable two years ago,” says Keel. He assumes that the price has risen there too.

According to industry representatives, the increased prices will not slow demand for wood and pellet heating systems. They assume that many new pellet stoves will continue to be built.
