Penelope, my love: a mother recounts her tender and moving journey with her autistic daughter

In theaters on October 12, Pénélope, mon amour retraces the tender and moving journey of a mother and her daughter, carrier of autism.

Directed by Claire Doyon (Les Lionceaux), Penelope, my love, in theaters on October 12, follows the daughter of the filmmaker, carrier of autism. One day, the director opened the cupboard which contained DV tapes and super 8 reels. “It almost gouged my eyes out. We had to put all these images together”she explains.

The documentary traces the journey of a mother and her daughter through the years. It recounts different stages: the shock of the diagnosis, the declaration of war, the abdication of arms, to finally accept and discover a different mode of existence.

Penelope never ceases to acclaim what she is, I never cease to question who she is. The answer to the question is precisely in this infinite quest. “Everything is mirrored back to me. So isn’t it Penelope who indirectly tells me who I am?”asks Claire Doyon.
