  • Streaming service HBO Max wants to expand the story of Pennywise from Stephen King’s “IT” with a prequel series.
  • “Welcome to Derry” is the name of the series, which is currently still in a very early stage.
  • It is not yet known if Bill Skarsgård will return as Pennywise.

Pennywise returns to Derry every 27 years! We know that from Stephen King’s novel “IT” as well as from the two film adaptations from the years 2017 and 2019. While Pennywise actually haunted Derry in the sixties and eighties, the story was made in the films in the eighties and the present relocated.

Both versions of the story didn’t end well for Pennywise, but now Warner Bros.’ streaming service HBO Max has found a way to expand the clown’s story after all: with a prequel series!

Pennywise’s horrific exploits from the 1960s weren’t actually portrayed in the movies, after all, and so IT’s most iconic figurehead is able to return in the series Welcome to Derry, while the other characters from the movies aren’t alive at this point, although there could at least be a reunion with supporting actors.

“Welcome to Derry” has not yet been officially confirmed, but preparations are underway. Certainly a lot depends on whether Bill Skarsgård, who played Pennywise in the two films, would return for the series as well. Andy Muschietti, who directed the films, would co-produce the series with his wife, Barbara Mussetti, and would also direct at least one episode.

HBO Max is currently working on other series based on well-known films. A penguin series with Colin Farrell from “The Batman” universe and a series about the Bene Gesserit from “Dune” are currently being developed. There is also constant speculation about series projects for “Harry Potter”.

Until the end of March you still have the opportunity to subscribe to HBO Max at a special price in the Netherlands. However, the streaming service will not start in Germany until 2025, so until then you will have to use a VPN service to access content such as “Peacemaker” or “Hacks”.
