  • According to media reports, talks between the government and trade unions are in sight in the dispute over pension reform in France.
  • Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne plans to receive trade union representatives at the beginning of next week.

Laurent Berger, head of the CFDT union, accepted the invitation. He will go there to explain why this reform is a dead end and why the unions will oppose raising the retirement age to 64, he told the France Info channel. The government must understand that there is a deep resentment of the reform and a strong resentment of the way things have been done.

Again clashes at protests

During the protests in France against the pension reform, riots broke out again in several cities on Tuesday. 175 of the approximately 13,000 police officers who were deployed were injured, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin wrote on Twitter. There are currently no figures for injured demonstrators.

According to the Interior Ministry, a total of around 740,000 participants took part in the protests. The union CGT speaks of more than two million people.

French President Emmanuel Macron has indicated in the past that he is ready for talks with the unions – not on pension reform, but on other issues related to working life. But only in a few weeks. The government had also presented the increase in the retirement age as non-negotiable.

“I’ll talk about it,” said union boss Laurent Berger. If he is forbidden to do so, the unions must withdraw from the talks.
