Emmanuel Macron intends to raise the retirement age to 65. An announcement which, beyond the structural issues, is above all a political choice. The current president-candidate indeed wants to siphon off the voices of the right who are reluctant to slip a ballot in the name of Pécresse into the ballot box on 10 April.

Information that makes a lot of noise. According to information from Echoes, confirmed by Europe 1 with the team of Emmanuel Macron, the president-candidate intends to push back the retirement age to 65 if he is re-elected. A measure that should allow savings to be made quickly through a simplified system.

Macron wants to reassure right-wing voters

But beyond the structural issue, the purpose of this announcement is above all political. And not the least, since the objective is to try to siphon off the right voices tempted by Valérie Pécresse. Continue to “work the beam”, as they say. Emmanuel Macron wants to show voters on the liberal right disappointed by his five-year term that this time his hand will not shake: if he is re-elected, he will reform pensions.

We are talking here about a gradual reform, exactly as proposed by Valérie Pécresse, whose entourage, very upset, denounces “plagiarism”. Emmanuel Macron also mentions a retirement age of 65, exactly like the candidate LR. 65 years old is also a year older than what Emmanuel Macron had planned in his initial reform. A reform that dragged on a lot during the five-year term, by wanting to find a consensus with the social partners at all costs, and that the yellow vests crisis finally stopped dead.

Hurt Pécresse

A “failure” by Emmanuel Macron that Éric Zemmour and Valérie Pécresse have constantly recalled since the start of the campaign. According to them, the president has not been able to keep his commitment. But Emmanuel Macron is convinced that he is the most audible at the moment, in the midst of the Ukrainian crisis, and that he can do Valérie Pécresse very badly with the announcement of this project.
