Pensions: an inter-union “early January” according to Laurent Berger

An inter-union on pension reform will be held “at the beginning of January”, said Tuesday the general secretary of the CFDT, Laurent Berger, after the postponement of the announcement of the government’s arbitrations.

A meeting with the eight main organizations (CFDT, CGT, FO, CFE-CGC, CFTC, Unsa, Solidaires, FSU) had been planned for December 15, following the Prime Minister’s announcements.

But the President of the Republic finally declared on Monday that the presentation of the reform was postponed to January 10, highlighting in particular the need to continue the discussion with certain unions.

Mr. Berger was speaking on the sidelines of a symposium in Paris on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Ires (Institute for Economic and Social Research), which was also attended by the numbers one of the CGT, FO, CFE -CGC and CFTC.

Asked about information from the Parisian, according to which Emmanuel Macron “discreetly commissioned two historic walkers, Stéphane Séjourné and Sacha Houlié, to get in touch with Laurent Berger”, the latter confirmed: “You are well informed, but I have not space in my diary before the beginning of January”, he replied to a few journalists.

The secretary general of the CGT, Philippe Martinez, for his part affirmed that a press release from the inter-union would be published on Wednesday.

Asked about the hopes of the majority to soften the position of the CFDT, Mr. Martinez said he had “no reason not to trust Laurent Berger”. The inter-union is made of “stainless steel”, he smiled.

The two men will meet Thursday afternoon at the Social Museum in Paris for a debate on work.

The intersyndicale published a press release on December 5 announcing a “first date of unit mobilization with strikes and demonstrations in January, if the government remained propped up on its pension reform project”.
