Pensions: second day of debates at the Assembly in a (slightly) calmer atmosphere

While opponents of the pension reform pounded the pavement everywhere in France, the deputies of the National Assembly examined the various amendments tabled by the main political groups in an atmosphere slightly less tense than the day before. The first votes have already taken place and are, for the time being, very close.

After a stormy day on Monday marked by the rejection of several motions, the debates around the pension reform resumed on Tuesday in the ranks of the National Assembly. While 757,000 demonstrators gathered everywhere in France, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, the deputies were considering a series of amendments tabled by the various political groups. For now, the votes are very tight.

Like this amendment which suggested deleting the introductory article and which was rejected by only ten votes, hence the importance of being physically present in the hemicycle. The ranks of the Assembly were therefore well stocked on Tuesday and the atmosphere was intended to be less electric than the day before, despite a few outings from La France insoumise, like David Guiraud: “The social storm that is preparing will sweep you away, colleagues!” thundered the chosen one in a powerful voice.

Tense exchange between Gabriel Attal and Sandrine Rousseau

The deputies were also able to attend a tense exchange between Sandrine Rousseau (Nupes) and Gabriel Attal, Minister of Public Accounts. “Our main fault line between you and us is that we put people’s lives above the accounts and you put the accounts above the lives of the people”, launched the elected ecologist at the place of the former government spokesman who was quick to respond. “Madame Rousseau, no. There are not those who talk about lives and those who talk about accounts, that’s not true. Because the French, they know very well that you need a protection system financed social welfare. You make them believe that there is no budgetary issue! But it is a reality, that does not prevent talking about Madame Rousseau’s lives”.

At this stage, Les Républicains and the National Rally remain a little more discreet. Both groups are probably waiting for the examination of the articles which touch more on the heart of the reform.
