  • Contrary to traffic forecasts, there was only a three-kilometre traffic jam in the southbound Gotthard road tunnel on Friday evening before Pentecost in the early evening.
  • In the meantime, however, the line to the south has grown to five kilometers.
  • In the morning, the tunnel was temporarily closed for technical reasons, resulting in two kilometers of traffic jams.

Early on Friday evening, drivers in the canton of Uri had to wait 30 minutes, according to the TCS traffic service. At 8 p.m. it’s up to fifty minutes.

It remains to be seen whether the situation on the A2 motorway will remain relatively calm. In the run-up to Saturday noon, the TCS expected intensive traffic. In previous years, the traffic jam in the south did not clear up on Saturday night.

According to the TCS, the return traffic should then again lead to a sheet metal avalanche on Whit Monday and on Tuesday of the coming week, this time at the Gotthard south portal. The association therefore recommends motorists to start their return journey late on Monday evening or on Tuesday night.

Many vacationers over the Pentecost weekend

The southern side of the Alps attracts many short vacationers over the long Pentecost weekend. Last year, the sheet metal avalanche at Whitsun was around 14 kilometers long in a southerly direction. Drivers had to wait up to two and a half hours before the Gotthard.

But that was by no means record-breaking: in 2022, at Easter, Viasuisse measured the second-longest traffic jam since the Gotthard tunnel opened in 1980. At that time, a traffic jam length of 22 kilometers – combined with a waiting time of three and a half hours – was recorded on Good Friday. This queue length was only exceeded in 1998. At that time, the onset of winter caused 25 kilometers of traffic jams.
