Perfume mistakes in summer: we are doing it wrong

A life without perfume? We do not want! However, most of us are not really well versed in the world of fragrances – we want to change that now. Especially in summer we make the same mistakes over and over again – René Dominik, managing director of J.F. Schwarzlose Parfums Berlin told us in an interview what they are. He himself has been working in the fragrance industry for years and knows exactly what is important.

Fragrances too sweet

When we think of summer, we all somehow think of sweet scents. Well, that's where the mistake lies. For example, floral scents are very sweet, but according to René Dominik, the scents where a lot of flowers meet are not the best choice – just like heavy, opulent scents. The floral scents may now surprise one or the other, after all we somehow immediately think of summer. Why is that?

At high temperatures, our nose deals with scents a little differently. That is why most noses prefer lighter, fresh scents. The classics are, for example, the citrus scents such as bergamot, tangerine, orange or neroli. This is often combined with warm wood notes or tropical plants. This immediately arouses associations with vacation.

Incidentally, the second classic in summer are the cool, aquatic notes. Here the connection to water is created in our head. "It doesn't matter whether it's the fresh day at the sea or the river or a walk after a fresh summer rain. The perfumer achieves this with different ingredients. Cucumber is popular, we also have an algae essence at Schwarzlose, for example Bottles. " The colors of the packaging tell us a lot about the content, but that's not the case with all fragrances.

How wearable a scent is in heat naturally depends on the concentration. An eau de cologne is much lighter than an eau de parfum. Of many fragrances, for example, there is not only an eau de parfum, but also an eau de toilette or eau fraîche – they are perfect for summer because they are not so highly concentrated.

Buy only bestsellers

Of course, a fragrance should always somehow make us individual – even in summer. Nevertheless, there are (regardless of the season) the typical fragrances that every third wears. "If you buy the top sellers that are being promoted everywhere, you are of course not alone. Fragrances that have been on the market for a long time have already proven themselves – so why not look here?" Says René Dominik. If that doesn't bother you, you can of course wear and love the bestsellers and new fragrances. Scent selection is always a question of your own taste. A fragrance consultation should therefore never go against your own gut feeling.

Fragrance advice should be brand neutral. The name on the bottle says nothing about whether the fragrance also suits me.

Perfume + sun

If the scent of sunscreen is not enough on the beach, you have probably picked your favorite perfume on vacation before going to the beach. In principle, there is no reason not to smell good on the beach. But what we have to keep in mind, according to René Dominik: "Every fragrance that I spray on the skin also reacts with the exhalation of the skin. In summer we perspire more, which means that the fragrance is falsified very quickly a good direction – but it doesn't have to be. "

He therefore advises to put the fragrance in the hair or on the clothes (be careful with dark perfumes and light clothes!). Here we have no problem that the scent mixes with the sweat. In addition: Most sunscreens are already scented – here you would rather mix the scents.
