A graphics card that NVIDIA reserves for the Chinese market and on which the firm could make good margins judging by demand.
The implementation of the latest level of US sanctions on China has forced some chip makers to stop all exports of “sensitive” components.
Of course, the company NVIDIA is one of the first manufacturers concerned and we had already mentioned the habit adopted by Jensen Huang’s firm of finding solutions to skillfully circumvent said sanctions.
A release in early 2024
One of the most remarkable solutions concerns the end of the export of GeForce RTX 4090, these power monsters used by both the most demanding gamers and artificial intelligence specialists.
Since November 17, these cards can no longer be exported to China and the sanction quickly had its effects with the almost immediate disappearance of the reference from Chinese resellers. We have even seen old RTX 4090 cards being recovered, stripped down and finally reconditioned into cards for AI, a more lucrative market.
NVIDIA, however, had another trick up its sleeve and as it was able to do by releasing the A800/H800 following the ban on exporting the A100/H100, the company is now planning the GeForce RTX 4090D.
Slightly increasing frequencies
Confirmed by several sources, the card in question has obviously not yet been made official by NVIDIA. It is even possible that it will never be so in our latitudes since it targets exclusively the Chinese market.
In order to stay below 4,800 points on the “Total Processing Performance” index retained by Washington for the export limit, NVIDIA would not have been forced to make many modifications to its flagship card. We don’t have the exact numbers yet, but it appears that the number of CUDA cores has been reduced to meet the requirements. On the other hand, the base frequency would be slightly increased: we are talking about 2,280 MHz compared to 2,235 MHz on the “classic” RTX 4090.
The GeForce RTX 4090D, however, would not be able to go higher than its big sister in boost: we are talking about 2,520 MHz in either case. It therefore remains to know the details of the GPU and the type of VRAM used on this card planned from January 2024.
In the journey of a gamer or creator, the choice of a graphics card is not one that should be taken lightly. An essential component of a machine designed for gaming or production, the graphics card plays an increasingly important role. Let’s try to guide your choices during this period when all models are quite easily found.
