An unknown perpetrator is suspected of having used a long gun to cause the forest fire in Bitsch and Riederalp in Valais a year ago.
This was shown by the results of investigations published on Monday by the public prosecutor’s office and the cantonal police.
A gunshot severed a wire in a power line, causing a short circuit.
The conductor cables of the main power line at the Massa power station in Bitche were shot at several times and deliberately, according to a press release. Another shot severed the copper wire of the branch line at a mast, causing a short circuit.
The overheating caused by the short circuit caused the conductor cable to break and fall to the ground, it was said. The attempt to manually switch on the line as required by the factory in order to check for the short circuit presumably triggered the forest fire.
The forest fire began on July 17, 2023. Almost three weeks later, it was largely contained. An area of 132 hectares was affected by the forest fire. About three quarters of the trees in the affected forest area burned.
