Peru ‘definitively’ recalls its ambassador to Mexico


Peruvian President Dina Boluarte announced on Friday the “final recallfrom his ambassador to Mexico, citing the support given by the Mexican head of state to the deposed Peruvian president Pedro Castillo.

Dina Boluarte, who succeeded Castillo after the latter’s arrest on December 7, denounced interference “unacceptableby Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in theInternal Affairs» Peruvians.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries have now been downgraded to the level of charges d’affaires, said Dina Boluarte. Peru had already expelled Mexico’s ambassador to Lima in late December after that country granted political asylum to Castillo’s wife and two sons.

The Mexican head of state, from the left like Pedro Castillo, had stressed on Friday that he wanted “continue to support the unjustly deposed president“. Castillo is accused of having attempted a coup d’etat by wanting to dissolve the Parliament which was about to oust him from power.

His dismissal and arrest sparked two months of protests across the country, in which at least 48 civilians and a member of the security forces died.
