MEXICO CITY/LIMA (Reuters) – Peru declared the Mexican ambassador persona non grata on Tuesday, the Peruvian foreign minister said, adding that the diplomat had 72 hours to leave the territory.

The move comes hours after Pablo Monroy announced that his country had granted political asylum to the family of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo.

The latter was arrested by the army for “rebellion” and “conspiracy” after attempting a coup on December 7 in the face of hostility from Parliament.

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated on social networks that the expulsion of Pablo Monroy had been decided because of “repeated statements by the highest authorities of this country regarding the political situation in Peru”.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador had said he was ready to offer political asylum to Pedro Castillo after his dismissal.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard tweeted on Tuesday evening that the expulsion of Pablo Monroy was “unjustified and reprehensible”.

Peruvian Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi announced on Twitter that Pedro Castillo’s wife and children, who are currently at the Mexican Embassy in Lima, would be allowed to travel to Mexico.
