The consumption of industrial breads has increased with the confinement, explains 60 million consumers. However, these foods contain products harmful to health, warns the association.

August 30, 2021 is released a magazine study of 60 Million Consumers which targets a food very present in our kitchens: industrial breads. Sandwich breads, bagels, burger buns have been carefully scrutinized in their composition. About thirty products analyzed contain traces of pesticides. The study also looked at the nutritional intake of these products. These are both major brands that are targeted, but also those of distributors.
Regarding pesticides, the legal presence thresholds are not exceeded. However, even their mere presence raises questions about long-term health. Here, among the monitored molecules, we find endocrine disruptors, that is to say molecules that interfere with the hormonal system. The reason for this presence? They come from the cultivation of wheat. Asked by Ouest-France, Xavier Lefebvre, food engineer Explain : “Pesticides are found everywhere and even sometimes in organic products, because when they are not used directly, they remain in the soil for a long time and take time to evacuate.”

Another surprise explained by the engineer: the relative good food score of these products. “The Nutri-Score gives a simplified indication, specifies Xavier Lefebvre. Even if the breads are generally low in fiber and very salty, these bad points are strongly offset by the fact that they are products that remain very little sweet and low in fat. “ So beware.
