Scandal musician Pete Doherty has to change his life after a diagnosis. But he “lacks the discipline at the moment.”

The British rock musician Pete Doherty (44) has received a diagnosis from a doctor that requires another change in life. Speaking to The Guardian’s Saturday Magazine, he said: “I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. And at the moment I lack the discipline to get my cholesterol levels under control.” He’s just “a bit of a glutton.”

Pete Doherty: ‘Alcohol, cheese and sugar are just as bad’

The 44-year-old The Libertines singer has already endured a major health battle. He is said to have overcome drug addiction, including crack and heroin, three years ago. According to his own statements, he still drinks alcohol. “I have given up the most important poisons and my health has improved,” he summarizes in the interview. He adds, slightly resigned: “Then you’re told that alcohol, cheese and sugar are just as bad and that you were healthier when you were still taking heroin.”

Pete Doherty had previously told documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux (53) for his series “Louis Theroux Interviews” (BBC, November 2023) said that he was “a very sick man”. The musician admitted that he could no longer imagine a long life due to his previous lifestyle and that he believed “that death is lurking.”

Pete Doherty celebrated his greatest successes with the bands The Libertines and Babyshambles. His relationship with supermodel Kate Moss (50), to whom he became engaged in 2005, made headlines. The couple separated in 2007. Doherty has been married to musician Katia de Vidas since 2021. She saved his life, he said. His third child, daughter Billie-May Doherty, was born in May last year. The musician has a son and another daughter from previous relationships.

Fight type 2 diabetes with the right lifestyle

Diabetes is a lifelong condition in which a person’s blood sugar levels become too high. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1, in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. And type 2, in which the body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells do not respond to the insulin. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be reduced through a healthy diet, regular exercise and a healthy body weight.

The main symptoms of diabetes include feeling very thirsty, having to urinate more often (especially at night), feeling very tired, and losing weight and muscle mass.
