Peter Lundgren, Swedish tennis player and former coach of Roger Federer, dies at age 59

Swedish tennis player Peter Lundgren, former coach of Roger Federer, has died at the age of 59, his son Lukas announced on social media on Friday August 23. “Unfortunately, one of the greatest has left us far too soon. A coach, a player, a friend and a father”his son wrote on Facebook, attaching a photo of Peter Lundgren flanked by the Swiss tennis star and Stan Wawrinka, another Swiss player he coached.

Lundgren won three ATP titles and reached No. 25e world ranking in 1985, a blessed time for Swedish tennis with stars like Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg who succeeded the icon Bjorn Borg.

“Peter Lundgren was an extraordinary person with a huge heart and a great sense of humor.”reacted Bjorn Borg with the daily Aftonbladet. “He was adored by all. He will be missed in world tennis.”

After his career, Lundgren coached Roger Federer between 2000 and 2003, contributing to the success of the Swiss, who with his Swedish coach won ten ATP tournaments and his first Grand Slam title, at Wimbledon in 2003.
