Peter Urban was the German voice of the ESC for around a quarter of a century. In an interview, he tells how he feels after his departure.

Most people probably associate Peter Urban (75) with the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). After 25 appearances in the competition as a German commentator, the presenter and music expert was over on May 13th after more than four hours of live show. “From a wonderful ESC in Liverpool”, Urban said goodbye to the viewers in front of the TV sets for the last time.

ESC time for Peter Urban “really over forever”

“I’m feeling a real sadness right now. It’s only now that I’ve really realized that my good time at the ESC is really over forever,” said the 75-year-old after his farewell the “Bild am Sonntag”. “I’m physically handicapped after ten hip surgeries,” Urban continued. It is “not as easy for him as it used to be” to walk long distances and climb stairs behind the scenes: “I’m 75 too.”

“I thank the commentators from many countries who have become friends and my family, who often had to do without me. Now we can watch together,” said Urban at the end of the broadcast. “Above all, I would like to thank you at home for your loyalty, trust and fun at the ESC, even in the years when things didn’t go so well for us. It was always a pleasure and a great honor for me.” It’s a pity that the German contribution Lord of the Lost ended up in last place. “Oh, I really would have hoped for more with my last ESC. Really. Really,” said Urban, apparently disappointed, during the broadcast.

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest was held in Liverpool. Because of the war, Great Britain organized the music competition for last year’s winner, Ukraine. “My love of pop music started with the Beatles and their hometown,” Urban told BamS. “I thought it would be a nice ending if I also said goodbye to the ESC in this city.”

And how will things continue for Urban after his exit? The presenter not only wants to watch the upcoming editions of the ESC with his wife Laura. According to the report, podcast and radio moderations are pending. He also wants to help his wife with her patisserie business.
