Peugeot 3008 and 5008: new 48 V mild-hybrid technology

Peugeot is unveiling a hybrid engine based on a 48 V architecture, and it is the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs that will be the first to replace the entry-level PureTech 130 EAT8 engine. Later in the year, this engine will arrive on the 308, 308 SW, 408, 208 and 2008.

It is based on a new generation of PureTech gasoline engine specially developed to integrate with hybridization. It has a variable geometry three-cylinder turbocharged 1199 cc petrol unit developing 136 hp and 230 Nm of torque. The fragile timing belt is replaced by a chain, while operation is based on a Miller cycle for better thermal combustion efficiency.

This block is associated with an unprecedented Punch Powertrain e-DCS6 six-speed dual-clutch gearbox with no break in torque. The electric motor, inverter and computer are housed in its casing. The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor (Nidec/PSA joint venture) develops a power of 21 kW (28 hp) and a torque of 55 Nm. This motor is powered by the 48 V battery placed under the left front seat and should only therefore not reduce the size of the trunk. This 48 V lithium-ion battery has a gross capacity of 898 Wh (0.9 kWh) and available 432 Wh.

In addition to an increase in torque at low revs, the manufacturer announces a reduction of up to 15% in fuel consumption, with a gain of 2.5 l/100 km in town and 0.7 l/100 km on the highway. In the same way, CO2 emissions have been revised downwards with 20 g/km less, i.e. 126 g of CO2/km on the 3008 and 128 g on the 5008. Peugeot estimates that its hybridization will allow more than 50% of 100% electric city driving. This new engine offers the possibility of starting, maneuvering (for parking, for example) and traveling at low speed in full electrons in heavy traffic.

In the deceleration phases, the electric motor acts as a generator to recharge the 48 V battery of the hybrid system. It also ensures the main starting of the internal combustion engine with the assistance of the belt-starter. Peugeot therefore does not revolutionize hybridization and still does not reveal a system comparable to what Toyota offers, but the gains from this mild-hybrid engine may be significant in town and on the road. What’s more, the penalty will drop from €983 to €125 on the 3008 and to €175 on the 5008. However, we hope that this financial gain will not be penalized by a sharp increase in prices, which will be unveiled in the spring of 2023. As a reminder , the Peugeot 3008 PureTech 130 EAT-8 starts from €37,370.
